The inspiration for this challenge is the "Trash Vortex," a circulating mass of floating plastic in the Pacific Ocean the size of Texas. This swath of floating plastic death contains at six kilos of plastic for every kilo of plankton, and kills hundreds of thousands of fish, seabirds, and aquatic mammals every year.
If we don't accept the role as stewards for our planet, who will? The world is a microcosm—a big microcosm, but a microcosm nonetheless—and we are polluting it to uninhabitability. Biodegradable plastics exist, but they are too expensive to compete with petroleum-based plastics. It's time to revolutionize the plastic industry with the advent of an affordable, biodegradable plastic alternative.
